Just when you thought those skinny fluorescent (T8) lamps were your surest path to energy savings, along comes LED lamps to turbo-charge your savings! Thanks to today’s LED replacement lamps you can instantly reduce your hydro costs for lighting by 70% and more.
When fluorescent T8 lamps were introduced as a replacement for T12 lamps (the larger 1.5” diameter lamps), they offered a terrific opportunity to capture energy savings at that time. By converting (retrofitting) the fixtures from T12 to T8 (the skinnier 1” diameter lamps) companies were seeing instant saving in the range of 25%. And thanks to the extended lamp and ballast life, maintenance savings increased the overall savings.
Let’s look at an example using the most common light fixture found in the industry; a 2’ x 4’ recessed office fixture with four lamps. These fixtures typically include four T8 fluorescent lamps (32 watts each) plus an electronic ballast to power the fixture. The total energy consumption for this fixture is 112 watts.
Note: Ontario’s Save-On-Energy program provides fixture consumption (also referred to as fixture loads) specifications for the most common types of light fixtures. Their consumption guides must be used when calculating energy savings for rebates. (112 watts are shown for this fixture example)
So, how does an LED retrofit compare?
Because today’s LED replacement tubes can provide superior light output (lumens), there is often an opportunity to eliminate two of the 4 lamps without compromising the overall lighting environment. In fact, for 90% of my lighting projects of this type, my clients prefer the light output from two lamps over four.
- 68% Energy Savings
- 25% Savings through reduced maintenance
- Superior compatibility for controls such as occupancy sensors and dimming
- Low cost of retrofit conversion = fast payback and return on investment (ROI)
Plus, thanks to rebates/incentives offered through Ontario’s Save-On-Energy program, each approved LED lamp qualifies for a $4.00 incentive. Or, for a significantly greater incentive, you can use the Custom track offered within the program to double your rebate!
I highly recommend taking advantage of Ontario’s rebate program while it’s still available.
